‘The Grey’: The Reviews Are In!

Critics give mostly positive reviews to Liam Neeson’s wolf-punching thriller.
By Kevin P. Sullivan

For the third January in a row, Liam Neeson returns to kick ass more than any other 59-year-old we know. This time he isn’t taking down sex traffickers like in “Taken” or whatever he was fighting in “Unknown.” No, this time, it’s wolves.

For a movie that was sold on the notion of wolf punching, “The Grey” has received primarily positive reviews for its deeper-than-you’d-think story and characters.

Check out what the critics are saying about “The Grey.”

The Story
“We meet Neeson’s character, a heartbroken loner named John Ottway, on the verge of suicide and thinking back, obsessively, to the woman who got away. His demons temporarily quelled, Ottway boards a small plane with his fellow refinery workers and in one of the most nerve-racking flights ever put on film, the aircraft runs afoul of bad weather and crashes. (For a turbulence wimp like me, this scene was not easy.)” — Michael Phillips, Chicago Tribune

The Star
“Having paid his quality biopic dues as Oskar Schindler, Michael Collins and Alfred Kinsey, Mr. Neeson has, at least for now, turned to the rougher and perhaps more lucrative work of action heroism. It takes nothing away from his earlier achievements to note that he’s really good at it. He conveys a ferocious and absolute seriousness even when the going gets silly, and he finds the soul in each new angry-everyman cipher he is asked to play.” — A.O. Scott, New York Times

The Wolves
” ‘The Grey’ is an unrelenting demonstration that wolves have no opinion. When they attack, it’s not personal. They’ve spent untold millennia learning how to survive, naked and without weapons, in fearsome places like the Arctic Circle in the dead of winter. They aren’t precisely unarmed; they have their teeth and claws, but how far would that get us, even if we had rifles?” — Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times

The Director
“We’ve come, in vain, to see [Neeson] danse-macabre with wolves, and the film’s director, Joe Carnahan, provides the occasional horror-film sneak attack. He also manages to create one of the movies’ more nightmarish plane crashes and conclude with just the sort of ludicrous finale that paying customers who’ve seen the ads might assume they would be getting a whole film of.” — Wesley Morris, Boston Globe

The Final Word
“For all its macho standoffs and action set pieces and menacing off-screen howling, ‘The Grey’ is at heart a simple moral fable about how true heroism consists in helping other human beings to live as long and die as well as they can, which is, after all, the task all of us face each day, even when we’re not fending off wolves with broken glass duct-taped to our knuckles.” — Dana Stevens, Slate

The Couple That Games Together, Stays Together

gaming1_wide.jpg
Who knew Christina Hendricks was a gamer? Of all the beautiful and relaxing spas, lounges and shopping boutiques available at the Sundance Film Festival this year, Christina was hanging out with her hubby, Geoffrey Arend, at the Nintendo 3DS Experience Lounge – playing with the new system!

Geoffrey?s new film, Save the Date, premiered at Sundance and Christina was seen by his side, supporting him throughout the festival. Geoffrey plays an indie rocker in his new film and said he?s had plenty of practice for the role after preparing for a friend?s musical cover party a few years ago. “I did Hedwig and the Angry Inch in full getup,” Geoffrey said. “My wife would come home and I?d be walking around in white platform boots, just practicing, because I knew if I tried to rock out, I?d just break my ankles because I?d never walked in platform boots before. So she?d come home and I?m dressed regularly for two thirds of my body and then I’ve got on these white platform boots, and she?s like, ‘I gotta go to bed.’ ?

The platforms apparently aren?t deterring Hendricks anymore, as the couple was seen getting canoodling all over Sundance, stopping in at the Stella Artois Lounge at The Lift, Chefdance and the CAA Party throughout the week. But Christina and Geoffrey looked very at home gaming together on their own separate Nintendo devices. Isn?t a little friendly competition good for a relationship? Other stars who decided to let out their inner gaming nerd at the lounge? Michael Cera, Malin Akerman and Ty Burrell were all spotted getting their Nintendo on.

These Stars’ Beautiful Looks Took Center Stage At The Golden Globes!

goldenglobes4.jpg
Award show season is in full effect! You know what that means ? gorgeous hair and drool-worthy makeup looks from your favorite stars, of course! Highlights from the Golden Globes include Emma Stone‘s cool chignon and Katharine McPhee‘s natural look. Hollywood’s top glam squad talent shared their inspiration, how-to steps and the L?Oréal Paris and Matrix products needed to recreate these to-die-for looks ? so now you can get the same glam on for your next fancy fête!

For Emma, stylist Mara Roszak aimed to complement The Help star’s eggplant Lanvin gown with a similar edge and effortless style. “We stayed away from anything too romantic,” says Roszak. “The rougher texture was key in achieving the goal of the style ? a strong feel while remaining feminine.” Meanwhile, makeup artist Lauren Andersen took a fresh-faced and youthful approach with Katharine. “This beauty look was very sweet,” Andersen says. “I used the flower, Baby’s Breath, as my inspiration for creating a look for Katharine that was simple and natural.”

Emma’s step-by-step how-to:
1. Starting with wet hair, applied Matrix Total Results Amplify Foam Volumizer ($15, matrix.com for salon locations).
2. Using your hands, rough-up dried hair to accentuate natural texture.
3. Used a 1? barrel curling iron, touch up natural wave throughout.
4. Take a dab of Matrix Total Results Curl Contouring Lotion ($15, matrix.com for salon locations) to tame any extra frizz throughout the hair ? and to give it a bit more definition.
5. Pulled hair back loosely, letting the front of the hair and pieces around the face fall out naturally.
6. Twist ends of hair and pull back to create a loose, messy chignon in the back, letting the front of the hair and pieces around the face fall out.
7. Once hair was back and pinned, drop the hair into the messy bun shape, pinning and wrapping each piece individually.
8. To secure the style, use Biolage Freeze Fix Hair Spray ($15, matrix.com for salon locations).
9. This one’s optional, but Emma pinned a Lanvin hair accessory for extra glam.

Katharine’s step-by-step how-to:
1. To create the base for her look, Andersen started with Clé de Peau Beauté Refining Fluid Foundation (SPF 24).
2. Next, Andersen applied L?Oréal Paris Magic Smooth Soufflé Blush in Celestial ($13, drugstores) to the apples of Katharine?s cheeks for a soft, natural flush.
3. On the Smash star’s eyes, Andersen swiped L?Oréal Paris Infallible Eye Shadow in Iced Latte ($8, drugstores) across the lids, blending it into the crease for a sultry, warm smoky eye.
4. With a light hand, Andersen also thinly lined the eyes with L?Oréal Paris Voluminous Smoldering Eyeliner in Brown ($9, drugstores) to deepen the look of lashes, which she coated with L?Oréal Paris Voluminous Million Lashes Mascara ($9, drugstores).
5. Her lips? Andersen used Dior Rouge Contour Lip Liner in Linen and L?Oréal Paris Infallible Gloss 8HR in Petal ($10, drugstores).
6. Finally, Andersen finished Katharine’s look with a dusting of YSL Poudre Sur Mesure ? a semi-loose powder in neutral to set the overall look.
